Premium Japanese Sakes Perfect For the Festive Season

Dec 22 2020 - Blog

The year is finally coming to an end, and what better way to celebrate than by kicking off the festive season with a bang? Take a deep breath, the party is about to begin; say hello to an entire month of yacht-cations, festive menus, gift ideas, and more!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, wouldn’t you agree? A sparkling veil of happiness seems to hover in the air, where our days are filled with feasting, feasting, and more feasting!

Falling on the 25th December every year, Christmas is celebrated by Christians as the day that Jesus was born; for others, the day dangles plenty of delightful customs, such as exchanging gifts, gathering with family and friends, decorating Christmas trees, and so on. This year’s celebrations might not be as grandiose as usual, but that doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop!

A festive feast usually offers the usual suspects of turkey, ham, and the like – but what about the bubbly? This Christmas, add a little pizazz to the dining affair with some of our favourite sakes:

1. Raifuku Junmai Daiginjo

We’re kicking off our selection with one of Japan’s best highly polished sakes – a rare prized commodity, the Raifuku Junmai Daiginjo has a smooth and luxurious consistency. With a premium rice polishing rate of 8% (imagine that!), the polished sake is brewed with flower yeast extract from actual flowers. Delight in a fruity sensation on the palate, topped off with a bouquet of rice and floral aromas.

That’s not all; the sake was ranked first in a sake competition under the Super Premium category, and even earned 96 Parker points in 2016! The sake comes in a striking blue bottle as well, adding a dynamic pop of colour to your festive spread.

And if you’re wondering what makes a good sake, simply look to its star ingredient: rice. The type of rice used – and even where it originates from! – can make a world of difference. The rice polishing ratio also comes into play, indicating how much rice remains in a sake brew. A ratio of 8% for the Raifuku Junmai Daiginjo, for example, means that 92% of the rice has been polished away, with 8% remaining. And the lower the polishing ratio, the more premium the sake is!

3. Sake Gift Bundle

Now available on Sky Premium's member-exclusive eStore.

Looking for the perfect gift for someone, or for something to pamper yourself with? The Sky Premium's eStore exclusive Sake Gift Bundle might be just what the doctor ordered. Comprising a range of specially curated sakes that are imported directly from Japan, the bundle even enhances the experience with a set of Kimoto Glass Brume Drinking Vessels. Designed by French designer Arthur Leitner, the vessels have an uneven pentagonal shape. This changes the flavour of the sake depending on where you put your mouth – how interesting is that!

Other than the drinking vessels, the bundle includes three unique sakes:

1 Bottle of Yamagata Masamune Dry Junmai

You won’t go wrong with this well-balanced sake, which revels in a rich and full-bodied pure rice taste. Reminiscent of the sharpness of the Masamune sword, the Junmai sake makes every drop count. Gaining in flavour as it ages, this timeless sake is one that will be enjoyed by all.

1 Bottle of Tenbu Junmai Ginjo

Refresh yourself with the Tenbu Junmai Gingo, which tempts with fruity and floral fragrances of pear, melon, white peach, and peony. The sake not only tastes good but smells good as well – see if you can detect subtle scents of cotton candy and banana!

Swirl its gentle sweetness on your tongue, accompanied by hints of acidity and bursts of umami flavour.

1 Bottle of Ippaku Suisei Premium Junmai Daiginjo

Made from a special sake rice, this premium sake is made in collaboration with the Gojome Town Sake Rice Study Group in Akita Prefecture. Made with sake rice that’s deemed to be the most suitable for brewing, the Ippaku Premium is only released in two small batches a year – so grab it while it’s available!
